It was in relation to property in Louth I think, also linked to the RA

ANGRY Neil Lennon claims he was misled into backing a disastrous Irish land deal that could end up costing him nearly £3MILLION.

The new Celtic caretaker manager is being sued for £2.7million by bankers in the Republic over the disastrous purchase of six acres of muddy farmland near the Ulster border.

But Lennon's lawyers say he doesn't owe a penny - and they are planning their own lawsuit against the men he blames for putting him in the bankers' sights.

The star's Scots solicitor, Professor Leo Martin, told the Record: "Mr Lennon finds himself the innocent victim."

Lennon's troubles began after he sank £600,000 of his own money into an Irish property firm called Rocket Developments.

In 2005, when Ireland's property boom was in full swing, the company paid around £3.5million for the six-acre plot outside Dundalk,closetothemain Belfast-Dublin road.

The plan was to make a fortune from the land by building 61 homes on it, but the scheme collapsed after the credit crunch wrecked the Irish housing market. The Dundalk plot is now back on the market - for £350,000.

Rocket went bust, owing £2.7million to the Bank of Ireland.

And the bank filed court papers last November demanding that Lennon, who made a fortune as a player and through shrewd investments, cough up the cash they are due.

But Lennon insists he was misled and badly advised before the Dundalk deal. A source told us: "He is adamant he has conducted himself in exemplary fashion throughout his dealings with this firm.

"He and his advisers are very confident they would win any legal action but they would prefer not to have to go to court in the first place."

Lennon plans to go after others who were involved in the formation and collapse of Rocket Developments.

Professor Martin said: "We have instructed the most senior commercial barristers in Dublin to defend his position, and to pursue those parties who should have been
protecting his interests."
