A BEER fest at the Lowenbrau Keller bar and restaurant began as a promotion to celebrate the close of Dry July, but ended in the biggest brawl in The Rocks in 30 years.
Police investigating what triggered the riot – involving more than 100 people at 2.30am last Sunday – now believe many of those involved were drunken supporters of visiting Scottish football team Glasgow R*ngers.
There are also reports that some R*ngers players, here for the Sydney Festival of Football, may have been caught up in the melee. An off-duty police officer was among eight people detained.
The officer was among seven released ‘‘pending further investigations’’. A 29-year-old man from Pendle Hill was charged with two counts of assault and resisting arrest. He will appear in Downing Centre Local Court later this month.
