Former Denmark and R*ngers legend Brian Laudrup has been diagnosed with cancer.

The 41-year-old revealed that he is being treated for a mild case of lymphoma after the cancer was discovered at a very early stage last week.

"I was shocked by the diagnosis," Laudrup, who also played for Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Milan and Fiorentina, told TV3, for whom he works as a commentator.

He added that, while he faced a "tough fight" he was "optimistic" due to the early diagnosis.

He also said that he would continue to work for TV3 on Champions League matches.

Laudrup, whose brother Michael was also a Denmark international and now manages Mallorca, played 82 times for his country, scoring 21 goals before retiring in 1998.

He quit football two years later after winding down his career with Copenhagen and Ajax.

He was part of the Denmark team that sealed a shock European Championship win in 1992 after they replaced Yugoslavia in the tournament.
