Poland have dropped Celtic goalkeeping duo Artur Boruc and Lukasz Zaluska for their forthcoming World Cup qualifiers, blaming “misunderstandings” in the last squad.
Following the departure of Leo Beenhakker, who was sacked after defeat to Slovenia earlier this month, new manager Stefan Majewski announced his first squad today.
The decision to drop the former number one keeper was viewed with shock by the press in his native country, but Józef Mlynarczyk insisted that Boruc’s presence would be disruptive.
The assistant coach said: "We discussed the goalkeeper situation for a long time and we decided that this was the best choice.
“Last time there was too much misunderstanding with Boruc, so we're going to leave him to relax.”
He added: “We still think that he's a very valuable keeper.”
New national team coach Majewski told a press conference: "I believe I have made the right choice and we will see the effects soon."
Boruc’s Celtic deputy Zaluska has also lost his place in the squad. The ex-Dundee United keeper had been on the bench for Poland’s previous two qualifiers.
New boss Majewski has instead recalled Real Madrid reserve Jerzy Dudek to the squad along with Polonia Warsaw ‘keeper Sebastian Przyrowski and Wojciech Kowalewski of Iraklis ahead of Zaluska.
Arsenal’s Lucasz Fabianski, who had regularly challenged Boruc for the number one jersey, is currently recovering from a knee injury.
