Giovanni Trapattoni rewarded James McCarthy for his impressive performances for Wigan Athletic by selecting the 19-year-old for Republic of Ireland's friendly international against Brazil next week.
The Scotland-born midfielder had reportedly been considering switching his allegiance but pledged his future to Ireland earlier this month, having represented them at under 21 and youth levels.
He has been named in the squad for the game at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday week alongside two other newcomers, Marc Wilson, the 22-year-old Portsmouth centre back, and Greg Cunningham, 19, the Manchester City left back.
John O’Shea was not considered because of the leg injury he sustained in the controversial defeat by France in a World Cup play-off, Ireland's most recent game. Darren O’Dea, of Celtic, and Hibernian’s Liam Miller and Anthony Stokes miss out.
Republic of Ireland squad to play Brazil: S Given (Manchester City), K Westwood (Coventry City), J Murphy (Scunthorpe United), R Dunne (Aston Villa), S Kelly (Fulham), K Kilbane (Hull City), K Foley (Wolves). S St Ledger (Preston), P McShane (Hull City), M Wilson (Portsmouth), G Cunningham (Manchester City), A McGeady (Celtic), Duff (Fulham), D Gibson (Manchester United), G Whelan (Stoke City), K Andrews (Blackburn Rovers), S Hunt (Hull City), L Lawrence (Stoke City), J McCarthy (Wigan), K Doyle (Wolves), R Keane (Celtic), S Long (Reading), L Best (Newcastle Utd)
Duffy and McCarthy, bad day for the knuckle draggers.
Get him signed up.
The Irish captain will be getting disgusting abuse for being an Irishman on Sunday.
Should of signed him when he was at Hamilton.
Die hard tim and one of the hottest prospects.
Galwayman Greg Cunningham got a call up too
Is he getting much football at Wigan?
We can't sing about Connolly,
We can't sing about Sands,
Celtic Football Club, is in the wrong hands!
Not sure as ive not seen anything of him since he joined them.
But it says in the article he has impressed for them.
Came on as a sub against Wolves, won a penalty and scored i think

Bit like Mr Marty.
Been getting a lot of game time over the past few weeks, Done well too anytime I've watched him.
he's a first team regualr now and after his performances so far one of the first names on the team sheet i'd say. surprised at how quickly he's adapted, definitely a star in the making.
he'll be playing out wide for the national team though, we all know trapp likes 2 defensive MF's, unfortunately.
BUMP
quie looking forward to this game. not expecting a win but it'll let us see how far we've come under trapp and give the players some more experience of playing against top class opposition.
keano pulled out today and has been replaced by stokes, who i thought should have been there in the first place, and richard dunnes pulled out, no one has been called up to replace him.
"ireland call up mccarthy for brazil"
i would have thought that would be the job of the brazil manager.
definitely didnt look it. i'm not too worried, for me friendlies are about giving fringe players a game anyway. hopefully gibson puts in a good shift in the middle, we seriously lack creativity in CM. he's got a few more games under his belt at united, think he's improving all the time.
great sig BTW.
He's a class player. Wont be at Wigan for long if he keeps playing well.
a thought he was supposed to be changing back to Scotland ?
Keano not injured!

Robbie Keane has joined the Republic of Ireland squad ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Brazil in London after recovering from a knee problem.
The striker was initially ruled out after aggravating the injury in Celtic's loss to R*ngers on Sunday.
Aston Villa defender Richard Dunne is out after sustaining an unspecified muscle injury in Sunday's Carling Cup final defeat by Manchester United.
He looks certain to be replaced by Hull City's Paul McShane.
Republic boss Giovanni Trapattoni will make a late decision about whether to start with Keane or Newcastle's Leon Best alongside Kevin Doyle of Wolves.
Wigan's James McCarthy, Portsmouth's Marc Wilson and Manchester City's Greg Cunningham could all be given their Republic senior debuts at some stage in the game.
The match will see both goalkeeper Shay Given and left-back Kevin Kilbane set a new record of 103 appearances for the Republic.
Keane will notch his 96th international appearance if he plays.
Brazil coach Dunga left AC Milan pair Ronaldinho and Pato out of his squad while Sevilla striker Luis Fabiano is ruled out by injury.
Dunga called up Wolfsburg's Grafite and Hoffenheim midfielder Carlos Eduardo as replacements while Adriano, Nilmar, Robinho, Kaka, Elano and Julio Baptista are also in the Brazil squad.
The match at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium against the Republic is Brazil's last scheduled friendly before the World Cup finals in South Africa begin in June.
