Just wondering if anyone from up around that area could shed some light on Down football for me
Down have a great pedigree 3 in a row in the sixtys a couple of ALL-Irelands in the 90'S, I also remember a couple of all-Ireland minor victorys.
So what is going on up there? is it lack of commitment or what
Every team changes, but as im not part of the down set up i cant comment on the commitment of the players....but i have heard a few down supporters speak ill of the manager,so if the players feel the same then 100% commitment wont be there, also there is probably a lack of talent........other counties advance through years, others get worse,it happens alot of counties.
Iv went to a few minor matches not the best footy but to be honest there is some raw talent on the field but like most of the minors they will prob not be given a chance!
I know a few of the senior team and there deadon guys but on the field they lack confidence and that's down to two very important aspects
1 the manager- he lacks belief himself, he knows the county board will do fuck all to him because there is no one willing to take over the down team! Carr lets personal opinion cloud his judgement! There ate some very talented players playing at club level but because the club has spoke out about carr he doesn't even give the young lads a chance! IMO down will continue to be a below average team until they show both carr and dj kane the door!
When they were 1stappointed they had the supporters support due to the fact they are all Ireland winners and would bring that spirit to the team! Obviously not!
2 star players have let it go to their head! If you ever want to find the star players the night before a match all you gotta do is head to to the canal court hotel and find them swamping pints! How are the young up and coming players meant to take example from this! Mickey linden has publicly hit out at the lack of respect the star players have for the game!
One of the best games of Gaelic iv seen was the down v Tyrone game last season was sitting in the stands in newry and my eyes were just in amazment at how good the football was it was end to end stuff we won by a point! That game has alot to blame for in regards to their pitiful performances after that, what should have been a confidence builder turned into lack of respect for opponents!
I want the glory days back with players like linden, James mccarten, o rourke and even dj kane they played for the love of the sport and seen it as an honour to play for county instead of todays players who play for the recognition and to have a name around the county!

Excellent post, i knew there was a lot more to it than just a lack of talent.
In kildare since micko left we had just terrible managers who hadnt a clue, now that Geezer has taken over he has completely overhaled the players, brilliant preperation, and decent tactics.
We really suffered from the superstar syndrome especially the young lads no more so than James Kavanagh, emmet Bolton, these lads used to play for kildare for the status and definetly not for the honour of representing your county.
I really fear when Grimley and Geezer leave because ive no doubt we'll be back to square 1, they'll no doubt be back in Armagh in at least 2-3 years doubt it next year untill he wins the leinster
il be honest I could never stand mcgeeney head mainly coz his ma taught me and she was such a bitch! My dad is actually mates with fathead burns (jarleth burns) and burns is convinced the pressure of the Armagh team would be too much for mcgeeney especially at this stage of him being a manager!
Mcgeeney defo has a presence about him and he is very driven to be the best so i honestly think hell be with Kildare til he gets to at least a semi or even final!
Did u know mcgeeney was 1 year of being a priest?! Yep true story
as for down well the talent is out their believe me you just gota look at the club level to see that it's just weather carr will take a chance!
Marty Clarke would have made an unbelievable impact on the senior team but he chose Aussie rules instead and he's really proved himself over there
No way thats mad wait till i tell the lads that.
Was Marty Clarke in the papers recently saying he was pissed off over there, that would be a massive addition to Down and take the pressure of Coulter, Does Coulter play his club football at midfield.
I seem to sense a little rivalary with Armagh![]()
Coulter can fuck of to Aussie for all I care, he should spend more time caring about his footy than he does drinking! Yea I know he's entitled to a drink but not the night before a match! The county would welcome Clarke with open arms!
Yep can't stand Armagh and it's mainly coz of there supporters from newry! When down were winning all around them bringing Sam back etc the whole town turned out all of us down supporters, once down started to slip and Armagh were on the rise half the town swapped support saying they were from the Armagh side of town (supposely the canal running thru the town divides co down and co Armagh ) bandwagon jumpers there known as! You should support your county thru thick and thin not jumping from one team to another just for the glory! I remember the armAgh Tyrone final every pub in newry was packed all the down supporters in tyrone tops just to annoy the armagh ones! One of the best days ever Tyrone won the bandwagon jumpers crying into their pints
i want geezer as armagh manager but not just yet for a couple of reasons. Firstly, he's started something in kildare and i want to see him finish the job. Secondly, there just isnt good enough players in armagh at the moment and i want him to have the best chance possible to succeed
It's not the creed or nationality that counts, it's the man himself
Celtic - more than just a club

Some amount of shite spouted in here about down fans turning their back on down and supporting armagh.
Armagh have always had a big support and i doubt the half of newry turned from down to armagh.....when down won their lasy all ireland i sat and cheered them in the nally stand at croke park...i watched them arrive home to newry...does that mean i turned my back on them...no...it means i was glad to see them win the sam........im not as bitter as some folk.
So mcfitz reason for detesting armagh is flawed.:p
If you were born in Daisy Hill Hospital...you were born in Co.Armagh
![]()
lol knew that would be brought up!! Actually I was unquie and was born in the hospice!!! So im defo down thru and thru! Daisy hill was having renovation at the time so mum had to go to the hospice!
Your a band wagon jumper if u supported down and couldn't give a fuck about Armagh! I know alot of people who classed themselves as diehard down ppl as soon as they started losing started supporting Armagh!
I'd say it's a morale issue, most of the players probably feel a bit Down.
:getmycoat:
Proud we march behind the banner, firm we'll stand behind our men
We will have them free to help us, cheer on the Celtic once again
I always supported armagh, but i cheered on down and welcomed them home as all ireland champions......there are people out there who are too fucking bitter to do that without good reason.
Im sorry to hear you are not an armagh woman mcfitz
And Buzzbhoy yeah the is a little rivalry but not as bad as it was....i live in mayobridge a massive down village, and wear my armagh top,no problem.....but in saying that i have not went to the pub with it on as when the drink is in there would be some tithead looking to stir shit.
Anyway....both sides are shit these days.
