Anyone play? I had only ever played about 3 (drunken) rounds of golf in my life till i got paid off just over a month ago and since then i've been out at least once every week with the missus' old man.
I really love the game and i am getting better with each passing game. Only thing is, her old man who is not a kick in the baws off of 70, keeps beating me every fucking single week and it's hitting me in the pocket as whoever loses buys the first few rounds in the boozer afterwards. Not to mention having to put up with his patter about beating me every week - he's a rankers fan so he compares him beating me to them beating Celtic and shit.
I'm out for another 18 tomorrow morning with him so does anyone have any tips for me so i might get one over on him and save myself a few bob in the boozer tomorrow afternoon?

i dont play as much since i moved here but used to 3 times a week back home. great game but i prefer par 3 courses as my driving isn't really good enough.
ever go to that golf centre at east kilbride stag? you should get a few lessons out there
Used to play, haven't in years though.
Only one tip here for driving; Keep yer head down when teeing off, move your shoulders not your neck, eyes on the ball. Took me ages to get that through my skull, i was always dragging shots for lifting my head too early, its a good tip though!
I played for years off of a 9 Handicap. Played my first round in a year and a half at the weekend, looking to get back into it.
Whats up with your game then if your losing?
I went driving a couple times after I saw Happy Gilmore when I was a kid and that spawned a game where a friend and I used to try to chip golf balls and hit alligators with them when I lived in Florida. Does that count?
It's in east kilbirdie we play mate. Usually at Torrance House or Langlands for a wee change. One of them yer talking about?
My driving can be the best part of my game mate at times. It's usually my iron shots that fuck me.
I know mate! In all fairness her old man has tried to give me tips on that but i just can't quite get all the parts of my body and brain in synch to pull it off.
Think that's my problem too - lifting the head to early so i can see where the ball is going to.

A 9 handicap mate? That's pretty fucking good is it not?
I think the fact he's been playing for about 40 years combined with the fact that actually i'm probably pretty shit is what's up with my game mate tbh:o
hahaha! no but it sounds fucking good craic!

its at that big sports centre stag, they have fitba pitches too. if you have lessons they video you and analyse your swing. they'll rip your swing apart and make you start from scratch. you'd be amazed how many bad habits you pick up
Aye its not bad. :o
Oh haha, all I would suggest is go for the green and not the flag, going for the flag means a less chance of getting a good result, where as if you just go for the large part of the green the chances are much higher and you might roll or bounce to the flag.
And get to a driving range and record how far you hit each club, knowing your range is such a great help particularly on new courses.
Haha, that's reminded me of a commercial. Is the process anything like this?

Ah i think i know the place mate - i'm pretty sure we drive by it on the way to the course. I'll check it out mate, sounds like the sort of thing i could be doing with - someone telling me where i'm going wrong with my swing and showing me the proper way. Cheers!
Mate i would be happy just going for the green. I try to but usually end up in a bunker, in the rough or completely off the back of it!

haha was thinking of that ad after i reread the post!
practice getting a bit of loft on the ball when attacking the pin too if you're overshooting the green often, you want a lose arm. if you're too stiff you'll be hitting the ball too flat.
when CE says he has a handicap of 9 he means on tigerwoods 10 BTW
Ah if its your Swing then someone needs to fix it in person, I'd just say start the backswing with the movement of your right hip(if your right handed) and make sure at the top of your backswing your left arm is completely straight(but wait until your swing forces you to do this, don't push it out yourself)
aha! I see what you mean about the left arm mate (just been swinging a golf club around the living room for about 5 minutes there)I noticed my left arm was always bent when i started my front swing as i seem to be trying to force it too far back - maybe to try and get more power? - but when i took it back to as far as it can go while keeping my left arm straight then the action seemed a bit smoother if that makes any sense?

Cheers for the tips mate! Went down a treat. I still got beat but it was only by one hole (we play match play) as opposed to the usual 6 or 7 holes and i was leading for most of the game up until the 14th by 2 holes then the big yin came back! A hell of an improvement though and by keeping the left arm straight i was driving the ball further than i ever have!
