Celtic are said to be interested in Werder Bremen midfielder Peter Niemeyer. Reports from Germany have linked the utility man with a move to Glasgow, as he looks to move away from last season’s third placed club after finding first team opportunities hard to come by.
Niemeyer, who is traditionally a defensive midfielder but who can also fill in at centre defence, would be available at a knockdown price, having been told by manager Thomas Schaaf he is not guaranteed first team football.
The 6ft 3in player’s desire to move away has alerted Neil Lennon, who has already recruited Efrain Juarez and Biram Kayal this summer to play in front of the back four.
But, with the Hoops boss desperate to bring in reinforcements in defence, a move for Niemeyer could provide cover for both positions.
The Glasgow club’s interest in Niemeyer goes beyond paper talk in Bremen, with his agent, Gerd Merheim, confirming Celtic’s interest on Thursday night. “Yes, there is contact with Celtic," Merheim confirmed to transfermarkt.de.
Niemeyer spent his formative years in Holland, coming through the ranks at FC Twente and breaking into their first team in 2002. He went on to make 106 appearances for the Reds, before earning a move to Werder Bremen.
But the 26-year-old has struggled to establish himself in Werder’s team, flitting back and forth between their top team and their reserve side, who compete in a regional league in the German fourth tier.
Across four seasons at the Weserstadion, Niemeyer has played just 32 times in the Bundesliga, while making 12 appearances for Werder II.
