hay Given admits he would be willing to consider a loan move should he start the season on Manchester City's bench.
Blues boss Roberto Mancini faces a selection dilemma heading into the 2010/11 campaign, with Given competing with England hopeful Joe Hart for the No.1 spot.
Both men have strong claims to the role, with Given among the Premier League's most consistent performers and Hart having shone while on loan at Birmingham last season.
There will, however, be one man left disappointed on Saturday when City get their campaign up and running away at Tottenham Hotspur.
Should Given be the man to make way, the Republic of Ireland international has revealed that he would need to weigh up his options before deciding whether to look elsewhere for regular first-team action.
"I think we are both at a stage where we need to be playing football," he said.
"If I don't start then I will sit down with the club next week and see where my future lies, and maybe it will be vice-versa with Joe.
"We both feel that we need to be playing. I'm at a stage where I need to be playing, I'm 34 and I haven't got millions of years left to play football.
"Hopefully I will play on Saturday, but whatever decision the manager makes I will respect that and then sit down with the club next week."
Pressed on whether he may look to secure a permanent move away from Eastlands, Given insisted that he is determined to play a major role in City's ambitious plans for the future.
He added: "Ideally I would like to stay at the club because it's a big club and an ambitious club, with fantastic owners and I want to be part of that, that's why I joined in the first place.
"Possibly, if I didn't start, then there could be a loan and then I'd come back and see where that takes me."
Given is still hoping it will be he who is given the nod by Mancini on Saturday, as he admits that whoever starts at White Hart Lane can rightly consider themselves to be City's first-choice keeper.
"The manager will decide who he wants to start with on Saturday and you would imagine that will be who he wants to play in most of the games this season," he said.
"Joe's a top keeper as well so it's inevitable that there will be speculation about who will start on Saturday, that's part and parcel of being at a big club because there are so many great players there. It's not just my position, there are 10 other positions where people aren't sure who is going to play."
Sky Sports | Football | Premier League | News | Given - Loan switch possible
I know he says throughout the article that he's committed to city but he does say that a loan move is not out of the question.....we all know he's a massive celtic fan, every time he's on Soccer AM he always talks about us with such pride and has said celtic park is the best stadium to play in and has been here before so he knows whats expected
would you take him on loan? or would you be looking for a more permanent GK?
Jquinn legend
Mowbray went to all the games and still had no clue what was going on
I'd take him on loan in a heartbeat.
Brilliant keeper.
I'd take him on loan in an instant, then worry about signing a GK next summer but continually look for a permanent appointment throughout the season.
Hopefully Capello will encourage this to happen if it means Hart gets regular games for Citeh. He's the best English keeper anyway.
Would love Given back at Parkhead. The one that got away...
Which clown thought it would be a good idea to release him?
McCari? Brady?
Cunts.
If he starts, we should make a move for Hart.
would rather he stayed at city and we got hart tbh, keeping national team in mind here.
.... this also wont happen![]()

Celtic want to take Shay Given on loan - News - MirrorFootball.co.ukCeltic want to sign Republic of Ireland keeper Shay Given from Manchester City.
And the Eastlands club are keen to send him over the border rather than to title rivals Arsenal.
Boss Neil Lennon will ask City to let him have Given on loan.
The experienced Irishman is set to be made City’s second choice behind England new boy Joe Hart today.
Given has already admitted he will not settle for a place on the bench at this stage of his career and confirmed Mirror Sport’s story that the Gunners would be an ideal move.
However Celtic are in the race for Given now, with Lennon given cash to invest after selling Aiden McGeady to Spartak Moscow in a record £10million deal.
Lennon is already trying to sign Given’s City team-mate Craig Bellamy but he is now hoping to snatch Given too.
The megabucks outfit will let him have the keeper too.
City are reluctant to let Given go to Arsenal to solve their number one problem, a weakness in Arsene Wenger’s side that may yet cost them a top-four finish coveted by both clubs.
Given would be the ideal answer to Arsenal’s vacancy - and has been considered by Wenger along with City rival Hart. But that deal looks too difficult to pull off now.
And Celtic are on red alert as Given heads for a showdown with City following today’s game at Tottenham. He has told pals he will be second choice and that is a position he will not accept.
Yes please!![]()
Shay Given and Craig Bellamy - How could we fail to win the fuckin league?! Who says the McGeady money has t be spent on transfer fees? Why not use it for these two players's wages for the season? Plus we'd still have some left for a LB.
Spot on Squire, I jst posted on the other thread that if we get these two plus the big Swede then if we play 4-5-1 (4-3-2-1) then our only weak link is Mulgrew or if we play 4-4-2 then add Samaras to that. Splash the cash on wages for Given and Bellamy aswell as signing Lee Wallace and we're guaranteed the treble...
As much as i would love to see it happen mate, i don't think it will. There'll be plenty of other mid to low epl teams interested in him and who'll be able to offer more money than us.
Who knows though, he's a Celtic fan who got released when he was young and instead of holding a grudge over it, he maybe feels as though he's still got something to prove here?
If it did happen, and we got Bellamy too, then i would be more than happy with the both of those signings along with another CB and i would guarantee that'll be more than enough to win, at least, the double/
