Neil Lennon’s hunt for a new goalkeeper has led him to Newcastle United’s Fraser Forster.
The 22-year-old shot-stopper – tipped as a future England No.1 – has come highly recommended to the Celtic boss.
Lennon has made no secret of the fact he is looking for a new goalie and is now attempting to prise the 6ft 7in Forster away from the newly-promoted Premier League side before the end of the transfer window.
SportTimes understands the St James’ Park outfit are extremely reluctant to allow the player to leave either on a permanent basis or even on loan, having previously rebuffed interest from Burnley last month.
However, Celtic hope they will relent and allow him to move to the SPL – and the player himself admits he’d rather be farmed out than cooling his heels on the bench. “I want to be out playing first-team games and getting experience, but obviously it’s up to the manager, and I’ve got to respect his decision,” said Forster.
“If I go out on loan again, that’ll be brilliant. I just want to play football, especially after last year at Norwich.”
Lennon is ready to pull out all the stops to secure his services after receiving glowing reports about the young keeper.
Former Celtic star Paul Lambert – a Parkhead team-mate of Lennon’s – worked with Forster last season at Norwich and is a massive fan.
Forster recorded a record amount of clean sheets in League One for the Canaries and helped them win the title.
But he is likely to start the new season as the third-choice keeper at Newcastle behind Steve Harper and Tim Krul.
Celtic tried to land England’s David James last month, but he decided to sign for Bristol City.
And a move to tempt Republic of Ireland star Shay Given on loan from Manchester City has so far been rebuffed with Arsenal and Fulham also in the hunt.
As revealed in SportTimes yesterday, Marco Fortune is on the wishlist of West Brom, who will test Celtic’s resolve with a £2.5m offer.
The striker said after last night’s 2-0 win over Utrecht: “I have nothing to say about West Brom. The manager here is happy with me and I am playing well and I’m happy to stay.”
But boss Lennon hinted: “Marco seems quite happy at the minute, so it’s probably just a question of watch this space.”
Morten Rasmussen, meantime, has signed a one-year loan at German side Mainz with the option of a permanent three-year deal.
There have been rumours the Dane’s departure was sparked after he returned for pre-season out of shape.
But Rasmussen said: “It doesn’t bother me what people say about me being overweight. I am weighing the same as I was before, and my fat percentage is the same as it has always been.”
Celtic have been offered Everton’s Joseph Yobo on loan. But they would have to pay his £40,000-a-week wages, and that would appear to make any deal for the Nigerian unlikely.
meh, Cervi is the same height, doesn't necessarily make a good keeper, can make em less agile. Look at Given and Casillias, two quality diminutive keepers.
Think we should be going for someone more experienced and/or with a proven track record, this wouldn't excite me one bit.
big huge bastard!!!
Don't want him though
Cervi.

BBC Sport - Football - Celtic line up loan deal for Newcastle\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s Fraser Forster
Celtic hope to complete a season-long loan deal for Newcastle goalkeeper Fraser Forster on Monday.
The 22-year-old, who stands at 6ft, 7in, impressed while on loan at Norwich last season and has also been farmed out to Bristol Rovers and Stockport.
"He's a big boy, he's come highly recommended," revealed Celtic manager Neil Lennon.
"His age is the only thing going against him because otherwise he's all the qualities you look for."
Norwich had hoped to bring Forster back to Carrow Road but were priced out of a move for the Englishman.
Burnley also made a move for the keeper in July but at that time Newcastle were reluctant to let him leave.
Forster, who will be in Glasgow for a medical on Monday, has yet to play a first team game for Newcastle and is third in the pecking order at St James' Park behind Steve Harper and Tim Krul.
I'd rathe a more experienced keeper tbh

doesn't exactly sound like the experienced new #1 we've been looking for...Celtic look set to make their 10th summer signing this week by bringing in highly rated goalkeeper Fraser Forster on a season long loan from Newcastle United.
The 22-year-old has yet to start a game for the English Premiership side but has already earned rave reviews after loan spells with Stockport County, Bristol Rovers and, most recently, Norwich City.
The 6ft 7in English keeper was at Celtic Park on Sunday to witness their 4-0 win over St. Mirren and will return to Glasgow tomorrow afternoon for a medical.
Celtic boss Neil Lennon said Forster has been brought in to provide some much needed competition for a place between the Parkhead sticks.
Lennon said: "He's a big boy, he's come highly recommended, I've watched him myself a couple of times.
"His age, 22, is the only thing going against him because otherwise he's got all the qualities you look for in a goalkeeper.
"He's got a massive presence and he's come highly recommended from people in the game whose opinion I trust, so if the medical goes okay, we'll take him on board.
"We've needed competition in that area so he'll add to that."
Would prefer the Deportivo keeper tbh.
hey Mr iv heard that story before.....mate told me about a year ago about some simple guy was left in the house alone a family friend came over seen the place was a mess and the guy going on about a troll says its in the cupboard under the stairs person opens it and a midget who was posting circus leaflets around the door came running out!!!!!

Newcastle goalkeeper Fraser Forster is poised to complete a loan move to Celtic subject to a medical.
Hopefully he's going to be third choice and a more experienced head is coming in aswell...
I'm willing to take Lambert's word for it for the time being.
I've a mate who's a Norwich fan, said this guy was brilliant last season.
Still, wanted us to sign a concrete number 1.
very worried about this.
I would be very happy with Frazer Forster. He is an excellent goalkeeper, and he has just had a great season with Norwich. This guy is tipped as a future England No.1 goalkeeper. Get him signed Lenny before somebody else dives in and snatches him from us.
