Celtic’s moves to boost their squad for the new season continue with manager Neil Lennon pursuing multiple targets ahead of their Champions League qualifiers and the start of the SPL season. STV Sport understands that Lennon and his coaching staff are currently running the rule over five trialists at their Lennoxtown training ground.
The identities of some of the quintet are currently under wraps but two have been confirmed by their clubs. Le Mans defender Ibrahima Camara and Vojvodina forward Slaven Stjepanovic are among those hoping to make the grade.
Guinea international Camara, who can operate in either full-back position as well as in midfield, is currently on the books of Le Mans, who were relegated from Ligue 1 last season. Le Mans issued a statement on their club website confirming that the player was travelling to Glasgow to pursue a contract at Parkhead. The French side stated that Camara would spend a week on trial, beginning Monday.
A return to Nantes, where he spent part of the last campaign on loan, has already been ruled out, offering Lennon the chance to run the rule over the player.
Camara, who was born in Sierra Leone, started his professional career with Italian club Parma before heading to France. A diminutive figure, standing at just 5ft 6in tall, he was dubbed by L’Equipe three years ago as “the Roberto Carlos of Le Mans”, who also rated him as one of the top full-backs of all-time in the French league.
Despite having a year left on his contract, it is thought he would be available at a reduced price, with Le Mans keen to offload the player following their relegation to Ligue 2.
Stjepanovic, a 22-year-old forward, has brief experience of facing SPL opposition. The Montenegrin was part of a Zeta side which lost 3-0 on aggregate to R*ngers in the qualifying rounds for the 2007/08 Champions League.
Currently with Serbian club Vojvodina, the player’s career stalled when he moved to FK Partizan in 2007, suffering ankle ligament damage and lasting just one season in Belgrade before being sold to his current club.
Stjepanovic, who was previously tipped for a trial with the Hoops back in May, will spend 10 days at Lennoxtown.
Lennon's preparations for the new season have already seen him sign full-backs Cha Du-Ri and Charlie Mulgrew while former Hull City midfielder George Boateng was spotted in Glasgow on Monday morning after being linked with a free transfer move to the Parkhead club. Talks have already taken place with Sol Campbell, Jimmy Bullard and Joe Ledley.
